When I will look back on his post, after an evening spent with friends and family, drowned in their stories, jaw hurting from all the laughter, I will be reminded of the days I spent by myself. Thinking , contemplating, reading or day-dreaminng.

The poem encapsulates the feeling when they were not around, when I had the entire house to myself, no co-passenger in my car, sharing a meal with the television, listening to the incessant radio that fills the void.

These words remind me then, to cherish them more..and listen more intently to even the most hair-brianed ideas, silliest of tales and simply bask in the warmth of their presence.

Sab Kuch Waise hi Chalta hai
By Gulzar

Sab kuch waise hi chalta hai
Jese chalta tha jab tum thi
Raat bhi waise hi sar moonde aati hai
Din waise hi aankhen malta jaagta hai
Taare saari raat jammaeyan lete hai
Sab kuch waise hi chalta hai, jaise chalta tha jab tum thi

Kaash tumhare jaane par
Kuch fark to padta jeene mein
Pyaas na lagti paani ki ya nakhun badhna band ho jaate
Baal hawa mein na udhte ya dhuaa nikalta saanson se
Sab kuch waise hi chalta hai……..

Bas itna fark padha hai meri raaton mein
Neend nahi aati, toh ab soone ke liye
Ek neend ki gooli rooz nigalni padhti hai

Translation by Pawan K Varma

Everything goes on, exactly as it used to
When you were there:
The night still comes with its head drooping
The day too dawns still rubbing its eyes
All the night stars yawn
Everything goes on exactly as it used to
When you were there.

I wish after you had left
Something would have changed in my life
I would not feel thirst, or my nails would stop growing
My hair would no longer fly in the wind
Or smoke would come out of my nostrils
But, everything goes on as before

Only there is a change in my nights:
I cannot sleep, and to do so,
I have to swallow a sleeping tablet daily!

This song came to mind at the end of the poem…Komal Rizvi’srendition, her voice, makes this epic song so soulful.

Time is with us and yet eludes us. Lately i find myself expressing how little time i have to do everything i want. Maybe my pace doesn’t match the energy around me, or i forget to look around me, peering into the future with such blinkers, that what is with me i cannot see.

Kharchi in my childhood was also pocket money. A small amount handed every day to buy tuck at the tuck-shop at school or simply to enjoy the amla outside the school gates.

Nowdays we try and steal this kharchi every sunday. Trying to do nothing…which for me would be late breakfast, read, lunch at my favourite cafe, read, nap, read….

In between the madness of adult life, i am reminded by those around me to stop and breathe. These souls that care for me, even went to the extent of planning a surprise dinner for me, with bubbly and steak….this poem is for them…my spiritual family….. by Gulzar.

Mujhe kharchi mein pura din, har roz milta hai
Magar har roz koi cheen leta hai, jhapat leta hai, anti se!

Kabhi khise se gir padhta hai toh girne ki aahat bhi nahi hoti,
Khare din ko bhi mein khota samajh ke bhool jata hu!

Gireban se pakad ke mangane wale bhi milte hai!
‘Teri guzhri hui pushto ka karza hai,
Tujhe kiste chukani hai~’

Zabardast koi girvi bhi rakh leta hai, yeh keh kar,
Abhi do-char lamhe karch karne ke liye rakh le,
Bakaya umr ke khate mein likh dete hai,
Jab hoga, hisaab hoga

Badi hasrat hai pura ek din ek baar mein apne liye rakh lu,
Tumhare saath pura ek din bas kharch karne ki tamanna hai!

Everyday i am given a full day to spend
But every day someone grabs it away
Snatches it from me

Sometimes it drops out of my wallet
And i do not even hear it fall
Even a good day i forget thinking it was bad!

Then there are those who collar me and claim my day!
‘It is a debt owed by generations before you,
You must pay the instalments~’

Others forcibly mortgage it by saying:
‘You can have a few moments to spend
The rest we will credit to your remaining life
And settle accounts when required.’

I yearn to have
A full day to myself, if only for once
And to spend that one full day with you
Is what i truly desire.

I end this post with a song from Alexi Murdoch, “Don’t forget to breathe”.
